Part 3 The More You Erase The More Grace Renewed

Episode 20 Providential Answer to the Prayer

Ms Choi gave all of her saved wedding funds to God. Since a young woman of marriageable age had donated all her wedding funds, I was worried about how she would get married
.

My church had to move again because the place the church was renting was sold. We moved again, renting a 15 pyeong space (533.748 sq. ft.)  for 230,000 won ($2300. The new church members were 4 so the total number of congregation increased to 12.

Around fall, the landlord notified us that he was raising the rental price. No matter how much the number of believers increased at church, everyone was not well off and could not make additional money anywhere right away. In the end, we reduced the size of the church building and moved to the second floor of a commercial building next to the road. Even that didn’t last long. Two years later, the building the church was renting was demolished due to the government building road infrastructure plan.

We moved to a slate building measuring about 10 pyeong (355.832 sq. ft.)  in an unlicensed shantytown at 634 Bongcheon-dong. The key money of 260,000 won ($260) was paid. At this time, the name of the church was changed to ‘Gwanak Church.’ In 1973, Bongcheon-dong was incorporated from Yeongdeungpo District into Gwanak District  in terms of administrative districts. When I translated the word ‘gwanak’ into Chinese characters, it meant ‘a mountain wearing a crown.’ However, when I looked into the meaning of ‘mountain’ referring to a ‘church’ and ‘crown’ referring to the King's crown, the interpretation came to be ‘a church wearing a crown.’ However,
in contrast to the meaning of the name of Gwanak Church, located in an unlicensed shantytown, had bars lined up on both sides. The one on the right was ‘Gimpo House Bar,’ and the one on the left was ‘Pretty Woman Bar.’ They were all tent bars.

During the morning service on Sunday, there were usually no disturbances, but when it came to the evening service, it was almost impossible to worship.

”Nearer My God to Thee

Nearer to Thee

E’en through it be a cross

That raiseth me

Still all my song shall be

Nearer My God to Thee

Nearer My God to Thee

Nearer to Thee’

When everyone was singing hymns graciously, songs could be heard from both bars.
‘How many years have you been living abroad?

Departure from Daejeon 00:50am ‘

We couldn't worship at all because the drinkers were singing to the beat of chopsticks. This wasn't the only thing. One day, a drunk person came to the church and became abusive, blaming the church.

“What kind of church is this? You Jesus freaks! “Don’t come here and make noise!”

Drunken people kicked the church door and smashed the windows. Under these circumstances, who would come to worship at a church like this? We couldn't continue like this, so we held a prayer meeting every evening at 8 o'clock to ask for a place to worship the Lord.

One time we cried out loud, “Lord! Lord! Lord (joo-yeo! It was time to pray and chant “Lord!” three times. Suddenly, a strong, drunken man came in, kicking the glass door of the chapel and shouting loudly.

“Kill someone (jook-yoe)? Who did you say you were going to kill? “I’ll have to kill you all first.”

He was drunk and passed by a church, and heard us cry out, “Lord! Lord! Lord! (joo-yeo)!” He understood the sound of  “Lord! Lord! Lord!! as “Kill me (jook-yoe)!” There was no way to stop the drunken people who suddenly showed up in the middle of the worship services.

There were seven bars along the road, with the church in between, and each bar had five or six prostitutes. I also tried to evangelize to them like John Wesley, but it was not as easy as I had hoped. In the end, no one I was able to evangelize, and instead the persecution continued every evening. Every time I passed a street that felt like the land of Sodom, I couldn't hide my heartbreak feeling.
‘God, please help us to move to a new place of worship.’

We prayed earnestly every day for the church relocation. Then one Sunday, a young woman attended our church. When I heard her story, it was said that six months after getting married, she was mistreated and
was now at her parents' house. Her face was darkly shadowed and often sighed after every word. At times, her mind seemed to zone out, and suffer from insomnia and depression.
“Sister, let’s pray to God. He will give you peace of mind.”

The sisters didn't even seem to have the strength to pray. I took this church sister to the Osan-ri Fasting and Prayer Center in Gyeonggi-do.

As I was waiting for the intercity bus to Bulgwang-dong to return home after asking a gracious deaconess at the prayer center for a sister, a woman standing there holding the Bible. She also got on the same bus as me. I spoke to her.

“It looks like you came from the prayer center. I am a pastor. Sister, which church do you go to?”

When I told her that I was a pastor, the sister seemed very happy.

“Yes, I am a nurse. I'm from Vienna, Austria. Recently, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit during a revival meeting and wanted to evangelize to my parents and brothers in South Korea, so I took some time off and came here. “After fasting at the prayer center for a week, today I am on my way to evangelize to my cousin who runs a dressmaking shop in Daebang-dong.”

While arriving in Seoul, she opened the Bible and asked me many questions. At first glance, she was a pure and trustworthy young woman. We arrived in Seoul and got off together in front of the city hall station. Since we had different directions to go, we had to change to different buses.

“Well then, I hope all things go well with evangelizing and go in peace.

I was about to say hello and turn around, but she hesitated and said,

“Well, pastor, if you have time, could you take me to this address? “I don’t know much about the Seoul area.”

Fortunately, I looked at the map and found that I knew the route well. Unable to refuse the request of this lady who came from abroad to evangelize her family, I guided her to the address in Daebang-dong, thinking it was the Lord's will.

But unfortunately, her cousin had moved to another place a week ago.

“Oh no. What should I do?”

“Oh I am so sorry about this” ”

“Pastor, you came here all the way because of me, but I don’t think you can just go back. I would like to visit the church where you serve."

She followed me out. I took her home first. We sat in a small single room, ate the meal my wife cooked, and went to church around 8 p.m. Coincidentally, my church was holding a 40-day prayer meeting.

The prayer request that day was ‘Give us a double-decker place of worship the size of a bus!’ Sister Choi prayed with tears in her eyes and stayed at our house for a month, praying with us in tears every night. The night before she left, she offered to God her bracelets, watch, and all the money she had. And soon after, a letter arrived. It was a letter sent from sister Choi in Vienna, Austria.

“When I close my eyes, I see the shack church standing between Gimpo House and Pretty Woman bars, and it’s painful. This is the money I have saved over the past 7 years since I came to Austria as a nurse. “Please use it for the church relocation.”

Sister Choi sent 1.5 million won ($1,500) along with the letter. At that time, the price of a house was about 3 million won ($3,000), so you can get an idea of โ€‹โ€‹how much money it was. While reading the letter, my eyes were filled with tears of gratitude.

God provided Elijah with the bread and meat he needed through ravens while he was praying while hiding in a cave to avoid King Ahab. This is the answer of our prayers that God was like a bruised reed and dying.  The Lord sent sister Choi, living in Vienna, Austria, to support our church which was like a bruised reed and a smoldering wick. It was an amazing, providential answer to our prayer from God.

God gave me grace through Evangelist Noh Myeong-ok when I was on the brink of death due to complications, and this time through sister Choi, God strengthened my faith to carry the torch of the gospel to the devastated slums. Sister Choi gave all of her saved wedding funds to God. Since a young woman of marriageable age had donated all her wedding funds, I was worried about how she would get married.

Two years later, sister Choi took a vacation and returned to South Korea to meet her parents and visited our newly moved church.

“Pastor, you need to marry me off. Please find a husband for me.” For sister Choi, I had a holy burden and looked for a husband with all my heart, but there was no young man in our church who could be a suitable groom. Unfortunately, all I could do for sister Choi was to pray.

“Let’s pray now. God who works and accomplishes things, please help this beloved sister meet her husband. “Please make sure to meet him even on a bus.”

Sister Choi laughed out loud when the prayer was over because of how absurd and ridiculous the prayer was.

"Pastor. What kind of prayer is it? I could meet my husband on a bus! hahaha ใ€œ”

“Sister Choi, when did we promise or expect to meet on the bus? Who knows? You may meet your husband on a bus along the way”

I was quite serious, but sister Choi just kept laughing and left the church to get on a bus, saying she was going to visit a relative's house. But something surprising happened. She actually met her husband on the bus on the way back that day.

After some time, sister Choi told me what happened. The bus she rode was full. She barely got on the bus, but as soon as a young man saw her, he jumped up from his seat and yielded his seat to her.
"Please have a seat here."

Although sister Choi was a little taken aback by the sudden concession, she thanked him, sat down on a chair, prayed for a moment, and then opened her eyes. And the conversation naturally continued with the young man. The young man said he was working at Daelim Industrial and serving as a choir member at Ahyeon Methodist Church. The story later went that the moment the young man saw sister Choi, he fell in love with her at first sight and yielded his seat to her. Sparks flew between the two at their first sight. As the prayer, they met on a bus and got married right away after dating four times.

The deeply devoted young man turned out to be the son of a wealthy family. With God's blessing, this couple had three sons and raised a happy family. God valued the sister's heart and dedication with the wedding fund and rewarded her with a hundredfold blessing.

If I made a mistake while writing or drawing, I would erase it and write or draw again. Everyone has a past they wish they could erase and moments they want to cherish forever in their hearts. God has an eraser. Therefore, anyone who accepts Jesus as their Savior will have all their wrongs erased by that eraser. He does this with unconditional love. Through Jesus Christ, He engraves all the good things granted to believers in their hearts so that they may praise Him forever. Today, becoming a pastor, a professor, leading a revival meeting, and establishing a church to serve thousands of congregants have all been possible because of God's eraser, the love of Jesus Christ, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. God's eraser is the blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross. Anyone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Christ will have their sins, sorrows, sufferings, diseases, poverty, and all curses erased by the blood of Jesus. Worries, fears, anxieties, and troubles are wiped away. Even when it comes to envy, jealousy, hatred, anger, and resentment, they are erased through the blood of Jesus. Stubborn and hardened hearts are also cleansed. In their place, God plants faith, hope, and love. Moreover, He enables all our desires to be fulfilled through faith, helps us to endure in hope, and allows us to bear the fruits of joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control by loving God and others. The struggles of fallen humanity are resolved through the blood of Jesus, God's eraser. Therefore, my family and I will live our lives praising and witnessing the grace of Jesus Christ, who is God's eraser. "I love You, O Lord, my strength." (Psalm 18:1, NIV) From the Kachi hill of Gwanaksan, Author Pastor Choi Nak Joong
